Course Kit: The Refusal Manual is a collaboration between Copyright/Reserved and CYRO, inspired by Ishikawa’s Otabi Festival and its history of repression. Otabi subverts power: children take center stage, and women—once marginalized—emerge as symbols of resilience. Through gestures, fragments, and reinterpretations, we explore how rebellion can be staged with children and women as leaders, seen through an outsider’s lens.
At the heart of Otabi Festival is a narrative around the subversion of power structures. Resistance in this context became deeply embedded within the culture, interwoven into Otabi Festival’s very practice and history of oppression. The festival asserts an alternative way of being or thinking outside dominant structures, norms, or expectations.
